Edeka Hahner is traditionally the basic supplier in Künzell near Fulda in eastern Hesse. The family business has been in existence since 1969 and is now run by the third generation. It all started with a butcher’s shop at today’s full-range retailer. And meat and sausages are still produced by the company’s own butchers according to their own recipes. It has been over 50 years since Karl and Margarete Hahner opened the doors of their butcher’s store for the first time. The brand’s own butcher’s shop still produces more than 40 types of sausage today. However, the business in and around the fresh food counter has grown considerably since its beginnings: the supermarket covers 4,400 square meters and employs 100 people, 20 of whom work at the fresh food counter. Marvin Hahner, who is responsible for the entire counter, deliberately focuses on service and advice. “The market is changing. People are buying meat and sausage more consciously,” he says. The trend is no longer to buy as cheaply as possible. “That’s why we need a team at the fresh food counter that can offer expert advice.” In order to have more time to talk to customers, Marvin Hahner wanted to optimize the work at the counter. That’s when he came across PricoPlex.

Efficiency at EDEKA Hahner has increased enormously
Hahner wanted to achieve more customer and employee guidance by redesigning the counter. He is convinced that the way the goods are presented has a major influence on what and how much is bought at the fresh food counter. While the layout of the counter has remained the same at 20 meters for sausage and meat, eight meters for cheese and five meters for fish, the interior has changed considerably. Edeka Hahner now relies on tiered staircase displays and a color concept that gives customers more orientation in the selection.
But the team also benefits from the PricoPlex equipment: “The trays are much easier to handle. The fact that the three-tiered step displays fill the depth of the counter and also use the height means that the employees no longer have to play an elaborate ‘tray tetris’.” Before Edeka Hahner switched to PricoPlex this year, it took three employees a total of 45 minutes to stock the fresh food counter every Monday morning. Now, the step displays and other trays are rinsed out on Saturday after closing time and put away again immediately. The new working week then starts more relaxed for the staff.

In addition to the clarity of the bowl layout on the counter, Marvin Hahner was also impressed by the material itself: “Unlike the products of other manufacturers that I know, the PricoPlex bowls don’t become dull. They retain their radiance even after many washes.” The counter outfitter from Eresing also advertises that its bowls are break-resistant and durable. Marvin Hahner wanted to know exactly that: Before he made his purchase decision, he carried out a practical test in the Edeka parking lot: The man, who is just under 1.90 meters tall, dropped several bowls to the ground from waist height, all of which remained intact and undamaged. “That was also an important argument for switching to PricoPlex.”

The counter is geared to demand
But what about the future of the fresh food counter? “For us, the counter is and will remain the heart of the store,” emphasizes Marvin Hahner. To keep it that way, he continuously monitors the market: “We pay attention to trends and keep up with the times when it comes to presentation.” For example, declaring allergies is becoming increasingly important. Edeka Hahner therefore specifically labels gluten-free and lactose-free products. “We now have 80 percent of these in our range.” Many other things are also changing. The investment in the new trays pays off
The decision to use the sustainable PricoPlex trays was made at Edeka Hahner with a clear objective: “We wanted to position ourselves for the future in this market segment.” The slightly higher purchase price for the high-quality trays quickly pays for itself: “The time saved in stocking the counters means that we have already recouped the higher purchase costs within a year,” Hahner calculates.
